US Commits $1M to Support Flood-Hit Children in Pakistan

The United States Government has committed US$1 million to support UNICEF’s emergency response for children and families affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan.

This contribution, provided through the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), will help deliver life-saving nutrition, clean water, sanitation, and hygiene services to more than 65,000 people, including pregnant women and young children.

This year’s monsoon floods have caused widespread devastation, claiming over 1,000 lives, including at least 275 children, and displacing around 2.7 million people. Essential services such as healthcare, water supply, and education have been severely disrupted, leaving millions in urgent need of support.

In response, UNICEF is scaling up its efforts in collaboration with the Government of Pakistan and humanitarian partners to reach the most vulnerable communities, particularly in the flood-hit regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and southern Punjab.

With the newly announced U.S. funding, UNICEF aims to screen approximately 32,500 children for malnutrition and provide treatment to 2,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM).

In addition, multi-micronutrient supplements will be distributed to both children and pregnant or breastfeeding women, helping to combat nutrition deficiencies in affected areas. More than 50,000 people will gain access to safe drinking water and sanitation through the restoration of damaged water systems, the installation of temporary toilets, and the distribution of hygiene kits.

UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, Pernille Ironside, welcomed the U.S. support, stating, “Children are always the most vulnerable in emergencies, facing the compounded threats of malnutrition and deadly waterborne diseases. This timely support from the United States enables us to deliver life-saving services and help restore dignity and hope to families who have suffered loss and displacement as they begin the difficult journey of recovery.”

This emergency response is part of UNICEF’s 2025 Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC) Appeal, which seeks to raise US$140.9 million to meet the urgent needs of children and families impacted by multiple crises across Pakistan.

The United States remains one of UNICEF’s key humanitarian partners, and this latest commitment highlights its continued support for the protection and well-being of vulnerable children in the country.
