Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day in Islamabad was a dynamic celebration of culture, adventure, and international friendship. From traditional performances to an inspiring mountain expedition, the event showcased Indonesia’s rich heritage and the strength of its ties with Pakistan.

On Sunday, August 17, 2025, the Embassy of Indonesia in Islamabad hosted a celebration marking Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day.

The event, led by Ambassador-designate H.E. Mr. Chandra Warsenanto Sukotjo, brought together Indonesian nationals, Pakistani guests, and Embassy staff to honor Indonesia’s cultural heritage and strengthen bilateral ties.

The ceremony featured Major General (R) Mr. Asrobudi, Advisor of the Indonesia Big Wall Expedition (IBEX), and the climbers who recently reached the summit of Trango Tower in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. These climbers were recognized as special “Guests of Honor” for their inspiring achievement.

Ambassador Chandra’s speech highlighted the strong ties between Indonesia and Pakistan, expressing deep appreciation for the attendees’ commitment. “Your presence today symbolizes our shared passion for Indonesia, and I hope this bond continues to grow even stronger,” he remarked.

One of the event’s key attractions was the stunning cultural performances, which included traditional Indonesian dances, martial arts, and the enchanting sounds of the angklung.

The performances featured both Indonesian nationals and Pakistani participants, underscoring the unity between the two cultures. The event décor, combining Indonesian and Pakistani cultural elements, further symbolized this collaborative spirit.

In a special segment, Ambassador Chandra presented Certificates of Appreciation to Indonesian female coordinators across Pakistan.

These women, instrumental in supporting the Indonesian community, were honored for their tireless efforts. As a token of gratitude, they were also offered complimentary medical check-ups in collaboration with GAK Healthcare International.

The IBEX team was celebrated for their heroic achievement of scaling Trango Tower. Team leader Freden Sembiring shared their remarkable journey, including a close call when a climber was injured by a rock.

Despite this, the team reached the summit, where they raised the Indonesian flag alongside banners commemorating both Indonesia’s 80th anniversary of independence and the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Pakistan. Photos and videos from the climb captured their breathtaking achievement at 6,251 meters above sea level.

In addition to the cultural performances, attendees enjoyed a mouthwatering spread of authentic Indonesian cuisine, including satay and nasi goreng, offering a taste of Indonesia’s vibrant food culture. The culinary showcase, complemented by refreshing traditional drinks, left guests with a lasting impression of Indonesia’s hospitality.
