Cyprus President Visits Spain and Portugal Ahead of EU Council Presidency

President Nikos Christodoulides begins visits to Madrid and Lisbon for meetings with Spanish and Portuguese leaders, preparing for Cyprus’ upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.

He will then travel to Valencia, Spain, to participate in the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress.

According to a press release issued by the presidency, the president’s contacts in Spain and Portugal will focus, among other things, on the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, issues related to the broader European agenda, developments in the Cyprus problem, bilateral relations, and the situation in the Middle East.

Christodoulides, accompanied by Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, the Director of the Press Office of the President, Viktoras Papadopoulos, and other officials, will depart on Sunday afternoon for Madrid, where on April 28, at 1pm (Cyprus time), he will meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

It is added that at 2:30pm, the President will meet with King Felipe of Spain at the Palace, with whom he will then attend a lunch, while in the afternoon, the President of the Republic will depart from Madrid for Lisbon.

As stated, on April 29 at noon, President Christodoulides will meet with the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luis Montenegro, at the Prime Minister’s Office, while after their meeting, expanded talks between the delegations of the two countries will take place.

According to the presidency, after the talks, Christodoulides will depart for Valencia to participate in the EPP Congress.

During the Congress elections will be held to select the new EPP leadership, while in the evening a dinner will be held, attended by, among others, the leaders of the EPP member countries and the new leadership, the press release said.

The Summit’s proceedings will continue on April 30, and President Christodoulides will make an intervention, while on the sidelines of the Summit he will hold bilateral meetings.

He will return to Cyprus on the evening of April 30, the press release said.
