Pakistan and Armenia have formally established diplomatic relations for the first time in history. The announcement came at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, marking a new chapter in regional diplomacy following the recent Armenia-Azerbaijan peace deal.

This historic development coincides with Armenia’s deepening strategic ties with China, signaling a broader Eurasian realignment with potential far-reaching implications for regional stability, trade, and multilateral cooperation.

In a historic diplomatic breakthrough, Pakistan and Armenia formally established diplomatic relations on Sunday, the Foreign Office (FO) announced in a statement. This step ends decades of no formal ties, previously shaped by Pakistan’s support for Azerbaijan in the long-standing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The formalization of relations occurred on the sidelines of the ongoing Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, where Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan exchanged a joint communique.

The FO statement highlighted this development as “a historic step forward,” with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter. Discussions between the two sides centered on exploring cooperation in key areas such as economy, education, culture, and tourism.

This diplomatic milestone follows the recent peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan brokered under the auspices of US President Donald Trump at the White House. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the peace agreement, affirming Pakistan’s historical support for Azerbaijan while welcoming the new era of regional peace.

Concurrently, Armenia is also deepening its engagement with China, having officially entered into a strategic partnership. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Chinese President Xi Jinping signed a joint statement at the SCO summit in Tianjin, pledging expanded cooperation in political, economic, and humanitarian spheres.
