Switzerland has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting dialogue and regional stability in South Asia following recent high-level telephone conversations between Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and his counterparts in Pakistan and India.
The diplomatic engagements came in the wake of heightened tensions following India’s reported unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and the tragic attack in Pahalgam.
In a written response to Political Uprise News, Valentin Clivaz, Deputy Head of Media at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), confirmed that Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis spoke separately with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar last Friday. “He reiterated Switzerland’s condemnation of the tragic attack in Pahalgam, called for restraint to avoid regional escalation, and encouraged a professional, independent investigation,” the FDFA stated.

Pakistan had earlier appealed for international attention to India’s “provocative actions,” which it claims include baseless allegations, inflammatory rhetoric, and the unilateral suspension of the IWT—one of the world’s most enduring water-sharing agreements. Islamabad has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the broader regional security concerns.
While Switzerland stopped short of commenting directly on the legal and diplomatic implications of the IWT suspension, it reiterated its longstanding position as a neutral actor willing to facilitate peace if both parties agree. “Switzerland remains committed to supporting dialogue and always stands ready to offer its good offices when these are useful and desired by both parties,” the FDFA noted.
Due to diplomatic confidentiality, the Swiss government did not disclose further details regarding specific initiatives or mechanisms for facilitating potential dialogue between India and Pakistan. However, it emphasized Switzerland’s ongoing readiness to contribute constructively to de-escalation and regional peace.

Switzerland has a long tradition of offering its good offices in international disputes and has previously mediated in various global conflicts. Its willingness to assist in the current South Asian situation reflects its broader commitment to global peacebuilding and diplomacy.
As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the international community is closely watching how such diplomatic engagements might pave the way for renewed dialogue and a peaceful resolution between the nuclear-armed neighbors.
